How to Choose the Right Outdoor Furniture for Your Business

It may not have felt like it this morning as you scraped the ice from your car, but with the Easter Bank Holiday fast approaching, summer is definitely on its way, bringing with it – fingers crossed – warmer weather. As outdoor spaces beckon, we want to help you make the most of yours, so here are some tips to help you make the right choices for your venue:

Consider your climate

Is your venue close to the sea? Do you have hot dry summers, or does it rain often? It might sound obvious, but just because a particular chair or table can survive outside, it doesn’t mean that it will be a good option for you. Aluminium is great, but it’s lightweight, which makes it likely to blow away in a coastal gale, and hot dry weather can make even the sturdiest wood splinter and crack.

Think about your environment

Do you have an open space or are you under cover? Will the furniture sit on grass or a solid surface like a patio or decking? Thinking about your environment will help you choose the most appropriate materials. Untreated wooden furniture left out in the open can absorb moisture and rot, while splashes from chlorine-treated swimming pool water can cause some metals to corrode.

Ensure adequate storage space

Even outdoor furniture requires some level of care, and that doesn’t mean simply covering it and forgetting about it for the winter! If you don’t have much room to store furniture, consider buying stackable chairs and foldable tables, or try styles that wouldn’t look out of place if moved inside your pub or bar.

Pick The Right Materials

The materials that you choose should be determined by your practical needs and the style you’re aiming for. Brightly-coloured plastic or metal options are perfect for contemporary venues, but can also work wonderfully for giving traditional venues a more modern feel. Wooden, wicker or weave options inevitably require more care, but are indisputably classy, very adaptable, and will stand the test of time.

Give Your Furniture the Care It Needs

Metal

Metal furniture in general doesn’t require too much attention, which is one of the reasons why it‘s so popular, but that doesn’t mean you should completely forget about upkeep! Aluminium is the most common outside option as it doesn’t rust, so you need only give it the occasional clean using hot soapy water and a non-abrasive cloth. We would also advise that you keep your metal furniture covered during the winter months.

Wood

Wooden furniture can require a little more care. Generally, hot soapy water or a suitable hardwood cleaning fluid will suffice, but if your furniture is really dirty it may well be worth lightly sanding it down and restaining or repainting it. Once you have cleaned your furniture, you have three real options: 1) Let it age naturally, 2) Keep it looking new with a stained oil, or 3) Opt for a complete change and repaint it with a brand new colour. Whichever option you choose, we recommend that you follow the directions provided with your choice of paint, oil or stain.

Rattan or Weave

If your furniture is made from synthetic materials, it will require very little care. Synthetic rattan is UV and water resistant so wiping it down with a damp cloth should be enough to keep it clean. Caring for genuine rattan products, however, will require a bit more attention

So there you have it!

Make smart, informed choices now, and head into the summer months knowing that you’ve done all you can to prepare for whatever comes your way.
