Supplying a Sofa to 10 Downing Street

Traditionally when one moves home they will often wish for new furnishings to really give the property their own “stamp”. Why should it be any different for the most powerful politician in Great Britain? The Right Honourable, Theresa May, will be announced as the new Prime Minister, the 13th of Queen Elizabeth II reign. In being asked to form a government Theresa May, will also be asked to take up residence at 10 Downing Street for the length of her leadership.

This got me thinking here at Furniture Realm, how would I cater to a PM? We always strive to supply furniture that defines a business, but to supply furniture that could define an individual such as Theresa May, well that is a challenge. Or so I thought.

In the last 3 centuries there have been many iconic pieces of furniture crafted, the Chesterfield sofa ranks top in the all time furniture design stakes. In fact, it is probably safe to say that the Chesterfield is the most famous sofa design in the world. The origins of the Chesterfield design are open to much debate, though it is commonly agreed that, after commissioning a leather button-backed sofa, credit belongs to Phillip Stanhope the 4th Earl of Chesterfield.

Where is the connection I hear you ask, well let me tell you. As you may be aware the Queen appointed Theresa May as Home Secretary on 12 May 2010 on the advice of then Prime Minister, David Cameron. Similarly on the 29th October 1746, King George II appointed Phillip Stanhope, as the Secretary of State for the Northern Department, the Northern Department now being known as the Home Office. Thus making the Chesterfield the ideal piece of furniture for Theresa May.

We welcome the new Prime Minister to view our Chesterfield Range, there may well be something to her tastes!
